Mason Jar Terrariums

Mason jars are a time-tested method of storage. Our grandparents used them for canning food or holding spare buttons. Today, however, we often forget the usefulness of these sturdy glass jars and cast them aside. Children will be given the opportunity to create a miniature living landscape inside a mason jar that will continue to grow and thrive with minimal care. Join us at Dundee gardens to learn the necessary elements of a “closed eco-system” on a smaller scale, and take home this delightful, repurposed terrarium.

Pumpkins – From the Inside and Out

Many of us have carved a jack-o-lantern before, but have you ever taken the time to investigate the guts of a pumpkin? What is all that stringy goo you scoop out of a pumpkin?  What is it for? And why are there so many seeds inside?

Join Dundee Gardens for a hands on exploration inside of various types of pumpkins. As we delve through the pumpkin goo, the history of the jack-o-lantern will be explained. We will divulge just how pumpkins came to be a staple for pies making, and explore the importance of this vegetable (...or is it a fruit?) in Native American  and early settler culture in our area.
Bumpy pumpkins, white pumpkins, speckled pumpkins too! Learn many of the varieties and what each variety is grown for.  Be sure to bring all of your pumpkin questions and your taste buds too!

This event is FREE and open to all ages.

Kokedama Krazy - Moss Art

Grades K-8th

Kokedama (苔玉, in English literally means "moss ball") is a ball of soil, covered with moss, in which an ornamental plant grows. The idea has its origins in Japan, where Kokedama are very popular.

This beautiful and unique form of art is often referred to as a poor man’s bonsai.  However simple, the true beauty and unique display shines through, and this form of artistic planting has grown increasingly popular. Join us at Dundee Gardens for a class which will challenge conventional planting methods and give children the chance to use green, living materials to express their own artistic flare.

All materials will be provided, and students will have the opportunity to bring home their very own hanging Kokedama to display in their home.

The Beauty of Bulbs

The Beauty of Bulbs

Every spring, daffodils and tulips, crocuses and hyacinths pop up out of the cold spring soil and reach towards the warmth of the spring sunshine.  But how do these plants know when to begin growing?  And how does that ugly brown bulb produce a flower?  How do bulbs spread?

Children will have the opportunity to answer all of these questions and more as we take a scientific approach to bulb gardening.  Students will get to dissect a bulb to see the plant parts that are still developing within. Then, students will design their own experiment to see how a bulb grows as well as what it actually needs to grow.

Yes, it is cold outside, and Spring still feels awfully far away, but Dundee Gardens is blooming with beauty…and excited over spring bulbs!
